Position Overview:

Be part of the Kitchener camp coordination team – where fun and friends meet!

 

The City of Kitchener is looking for creative, energetic and experienced leaders to help us coordinate our summer day camp programs for children ages 4-13 years.

 

As a part of our Neighbourhood Camp Coordination team, you will support a staff team to provide children with creative opportunities to explore and discover new things, to develop friendships, and to learn and grow through play. 

 

Our Assistant Neighbourhood Camp Coordinators are:

  • Experienced camp team members with a basic understanding of child development and early learning. 
  • Ready to take on a leadership role in program planning and overseeing the day-to-day camp operations at one or two sites
  • Energized to actively engage in programming, role-modelling great leadership and mentoring young staff to ensure we provide a positive and impactful program that is inclusive, diverse and fun for all.

Employment Dates: May 26-August 19 or 26, 2025 (depending on site assignment)

Hours per week: 35 hours

Hours of work: 7 hours/day, 8:15am-5:15pm (shifts vary)

Additional Information:

  • Participation in evening and weekend training June 7, 11, 12 and 14, 21. Please Note: ALL training in-person and online is required and mandatory to complete prior to start of program/camp. 
  • No work scheduled on June 30 and on statutory holidays (July 1 and August 4).
  • Work will include working in a variety of outdoor conditions, office work and active play.

 

  Selection is based on a combination of application and interview.  

Responsibilities:

Leading a staff team

  • Provide coaching and coordination of leaders at pre-camp training.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with all team members and actively participate in creating a high-energy team.
  • Guide and coach the staff team at your site(s) in all aspects of program administration and delivery including following camp safety procedures, problem-solving and conflict resolution, parent conversations, ensuring safety and cleanliness of program area and program equipment
  • Role-model positive behavior with staff team and participants (teamwork, responsibility, initiative, and sportsmanship)
  • Monitor leader’s program delivery, role-model expectations, provide guidance and compile and deliver staff evaluations.

 

Program planning and implementation

  • Assist with the planning and coordination of programming and special activities for your program site
  • Bring your energy and enthusiasm daily to lead and motivate your staff team to deliver safe, inclusive and creative camp activities
  • Actively interact with participants and assist in implementing camp programming in accordance with City guidelines
  • Provide support to volunteers from the Leadership Development program. 
  • Assist the Neighbourhood Camp Coordinator and Inclusion Support Workers to provide support and ensure the inclusion of all children in programs 
  • Promptly address incidents, problems, emergencies, escalated behaviour management issues, and parental concerns.
  • Interact with parents/caregivers, administration, community members/agencies, to provide program information and support, proudly representing the City of Kitchener by providing quality programming and customer service
  • Use good judgement and respond professionally to resolve problems and conflicts  

Administration

  • Perform administrative tasks to support the program including inventory and ordering of program supplies, time reporting, collection and maintenance of program rosters and permission forms, submission of incident/accident forms etc.
  • Assist in gathering related information and statistics and assist with writing the final summer report prior to completion of program. 
  • Provide first aid as required. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum grade 12 diploma preferred
  • Minimum two seasons with a camp or related children’s programming experience preferred
  • Minimum age requirement – must be at least 18 years of age or older by the first day of employment, unless otherwise specified
  • Valid CPR Level “C” and Standard First Aid Certificate.
  • Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check at your own expense as a condition of employment issued after March 1, 2025.
  • Completion of Principles in Healthy Child Development training is considered an asset.
  • Employment is conditional upon attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.
  • Access to reliable personal transportation to work is required.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
